My Dubai Adventure: A First-Timer's Experience

Back in May 2024, I decided to take my first solo trip to Dubai. I flew with Etihad Airways—not exactly budget, but not over-the-top expensive either. My flight landed at Dubai International Airport (DXB), which was super convenient since I was staying in the city. I figured keeping things simple would help me get around easier.

When it came to packing, I had a 26kg luggage allowance to work with, so I tried to be strategic. I packed a mix of essentials—plenty of light dresses and tops for the hot days, a couple of nice outfits for evenings out, and a pair of high heels to dress things up. I also threw in some comfy sandals for walking, a swimsuit for beach visits, and sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to stay cool in the intense sun. To be safe, I packed a universal adapter since I wasn’t sure what plug sockets the hotel used, along with a few other essentials like skincare products, a power bank, and a lightweight backpack for day trips.

I stayed at the Four Points by Sheraton Downtown Dubai. It wasn’t the fanciest place in town, but it felt just right—clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced. The hotel staff really stood out; they were incredibly welcoming, always ready to offer tips on where to go and what to avoid. I can’t praise them enough.

On my first evening, I grabbed dinner at a casual spot called Al Ustad Special Kabab. The food was tasty and affordable, and the kebabs hit the spot. The following evening, I treated myself to something a bit more upscale at The Meat Co. in Souk Al Bahar. Great steaks, fantastic ambiance, and perfect views of the Burj Khalifa fountains—totally worth the splurge.

I spent my first two days exploring on my own. I wandered around the Dubai Mall, checked out the Burj Khalifa's observation deck, and strolled through Al Seef, which had this cool mix of modern and traditional vibes. On my third day, I finally met up with some friends who live in Dubai. They took me to Kite Beach, where we enjoyed a lazy afternoon by the water.

One thing I was glad I brought was my camera. I snapped some great photos—from the dazzling city lights at night to the intricate details of the old town. Dubai’s contrast between futuristic skyscrapers and rich heritage is something else.

All in all, my trip was a blend of highs and a few rookie mistakes. Overpacking? Yep. But between the welcoming hotel staff, the memorable meals, and the photos I captured, it was a trip I won’t forget anytime soon. If you’re heading to Dubai for the first time, my advice? Pack light, stay hydrated, and don’t stress too much about the details—Dubai has a way of impressing you no matter what.

Oh, and maybe bring a handbook guide x
